That part number matters because Mighty Mule changed keypad wiring pinouts across generations and a keypad from an MM371 will not always talk to an M260, even if the connector looks right. • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is usually fine; the control board isn’t receiving the signal because the wiring has a break or the terminal is loose. We find this more often than dead keypads, and it’s quicker and cheaper to fix than a board swap.
• Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane under the faceplate is delaminating. In Long Beach’s marine layer season, this is the most common keypad failure. Where the membrane peels, salt air gets in and corrodes the contact grid.
• Intercom audio is crackling or one-way only. The intercom speaker and microphone are sealed in the housing, but when the gasket fails, corrosion builds on the speaker terminals. You hear a faint buzz, or the visitor side goes dead. Sometimes it’s just the speaker; sometimes it’s the amplifier chip on the board.
• Keypad lights up but shows no digits or the backlight flickers. Power is getting through, but the display controller is failing. This is especially common on older wired keypads exposed to uninterrupted afternoon sun in south-facing driveways.
• You have to press a key multiple times before it registers. The contacts under the keys are oxidizing. Not a wiring problem - a wear problem. This is usually when we recommend replacement rather than cleaning, because the fix is temporary and you’ll be back in six months.
