Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Elite-compatible keypad and intercom replacement parts for most residential gate systems in Long Beach, and a typical keypad or intercom repair runs between $180 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the faceplate, the internal board, or the entire unit. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the keypad stops chirping on button presses, or the intercom audio drops to a crackle, or the gate simply ignores the entry code that worked yesterday. We carry Elite SL-series and PR-series replacement parts on our trucks, and most Long Beach repairs are completed same-day once we confirm the model.

Adrian Vance has been working on Elite gate systems in Long Beach since 2014, and the failure patterns are consistent. In Long Beach, salt air off the harbor and marine layer moisture accelerate corrosion on the keypad’s membrane contacts and the intercom’s speaker terminals. What starts as an intermittent button eventually becomes a dead keypad, usually within six to eighteen months of the first missed entry. The fix is usually straightforward once the model is identified. Here is what we see, what it costs, and how we handle it.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite uses two main residential keypad lines we see in Long Beach: the SL-series (surface-mount, typically paired with SL-3000 or SL-1000 slide-gate operators) and the PR-series (pedestal or gooseneck mount, common on swing gates with Elite SL-2000 operators). The intercom side is almost always an Elite KSI-series or a third-party unit wired into the Elite control board’s phone/intercom terminal block. If you’re not sure which model you have, look at the inside of the keypad housing or the back of the intercom faceplate. The model number is printed on a small white label, usually starting with “SL” or “PR” for keypads, or “KSI” for intercoms.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: an SL-series keypad from 2013 and earlier uses a 4-wire Wiegand connection. The post-2016 SL-series boards switched to a 5-wire configuration with a separate ground for the backlight. If you buy a used keypad online and try to wire the 4-wire version into a newer board, the backlight either flickers or never comes on, and the keypad intermittently drops entries. We see this at least twice a month in Long Beach. When we install, we match the generation to your board and photograph the terminal connections before we make any changes.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Elite’s factory keypads are well built, but the aftermarket units from Linear and Nortek (made to Elite’s wiring spec) hold up comparably in Long Beach’s coastal air and typically cost $30 to $60 less per unit. We stock both. The decision usually comes down to lead time and whether your system is under any remaining manufacturer coverage. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite, so we’re free to recommend the part that fits your board and your budget, not the part that protects a dealership margin.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Buttons require hard presses or multiple attempts. The membrane contacts under the keypad face have corroded or worn through. In Long Beach’s salt air, this is the single most common Elite keypad failure we see, and it often starts with the most-used buttons (usually the first and last digits of the entry code).
  • The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t open. The keypad is likely fine; the problem is usually a failed relay on the Elite control board or a loose Wiegand wire at the terminal block. We test this by jumping the relay terminals directly, which tells us in about two minutes whether the keypad or the board is the culprit.
  • Intercom audio is faint, crackly, or one-way. The speaker cone or the microphone element has degraded, or moisture has gotten into the KSI unit’s connections. We see this frequently on properties within a mile of the Long Beach breakwater, where salt mist is constant.
  • Intermittent function after rain or heavy fog. Water has found a path into the keypad housing or the intercom enclosure. Elite’s older SL-series keypads used a gasket that dries out and shrinks after five or six years; once it fails, moisture tracks straight to the board.
  • The keypad backlight stays on or never comes on. This points to a wiring fault or a failing backlight driver on the keypad board. It’s cosmetic until it isn’t. The same board fault that kills the backlight eventually affects key transmission.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a complete Elite keypad replacement runs between $180 and $340 installed, with the part itself accounting for $85 to $160 depending on whether it’s an OEM SL-series unit or a quality aftermarket equivalent. A keypad board-only repair (where we replace the internal circuit board but reuse your existing housing and wiring) runs between $140 and $220. Intercom replacements run between $220 and $420 installed, depending on whether it’s a surface-mount KSI unit or a pedestal-mounted unit that requires re-terminating multiple wires. Every price is written down and handed to you before any work starts, under the Haven Standard Clause 1. The number on the written quote is the number on the invoice, full stop.

What’s included in every installation: the new part, removal of the failed unit, wire re-termination if the connectors are corroded, a bench test to confirm the new part talks to your Elite board, and a photo log of the completed wiring. If the old wire ends are green with corrosion (common in Long Beach within a few blocks of the ocean), we cut back to clean copper and land fresh connectors rather than leaving a weak connection that fails in a few months. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the part or the work fails within a year, we make it right at no additional charge.

A keypad or intercom replacement on an Elite gate system is low-voltage electrical work. The danger is not electrocution. The danger is mis-wiring the Wiegand connection, shorting the Elite control board, and turning a $200 keypad replacement into a $600 board replacement. If you have a multimeter, a wiring diagram, and patience, you can safely check a few things: confirm the keypad has power (usually 12-24 VDC at the terminal block), tighten any loose terminal screws, and verify that no wire has pulled loose. Do not guess at wire positions, and do not splice in a new keypad by matching wire colors alone. Elite’s wire colors are not standardized across model years, and we’ve seen a brown wire be a data line on one board and a ground on another.

We handle these repairs in Long Beach every week, and the whole job typically takes 45 to 90 minutes on site. If you’d rather have it done once and documented, we’ll bring the part, make the swap, and leave you a photo record of every connection. Call (424) 788-1027 and tell us the model number on your keypad or intercom. We’ll quote the job in writing before anyone touches a tool.
