Part identification matters before we weld anything. On the operator side, the model and serial number are on a silver or white label inside the control box cover, usually on the left wall. On the gate itself, there’s rarely a label, so we measure: hinge barrel diameter, leaf thickness, post size, and the distance from the hinge centerline to the operator mounting point. A 6000-series swing arm uses a different bracket bolt pattern than a 6100-series, and welding a plate to the wrong spacing means drilling new holes and weakening the post. We match OEM geometry from the measurements we take, not from memory.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for fabricated steel parts like hinge weldments, mounting plates, and reinforcement gussets, a quality local fabrication shop can often produce a stronger part than the original. DoorKing’s factory steel is fine, but it’s built to a price point. We have seen factory hinge brackets on 20-year-old 6300 operators that outlasted two sets of aftermarket hinges, and factory brackets on 5-year-old residential operators that cracked clean through. Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate drags or scrapes at the latch end. Most of the time this is a sagging weld at the top hinge or a cracked weld where the operator post meets the gate frame. The weld fails slowly, the gate drops a few degrees, and suddenly the operator is fighting dead weight. We see this constantly on older 6300-series swing arms in Long Beach.
• A shrieking or grinding noise that changes with temperature. A cracked weld opens and closes with thermal expansion. In the morning when the steel is cool, the gap is wider and the noise is louder. By afternoon it quiets down. Owners chalk it up to “needs grease,” but grease doesn’t fix a cracked weld.
• The gate shudders or jerks mid-travel. This is often a broken weld at the operator mounting plate, allowing the operator to flex against the post under load. The motor is pushing, the mount is giving, and the result is a gate that moves in fits. Left alone, this one can shear the mounting bolts off entirely.
• Visible rust weeping from a seam or joint. Long Beach’s salt air gets into the microscopic gaps at a weld joint and works from the inside out. By the time you see rust staining, the weld is compromised underneath. This is especially common on gates near the Colorado Lagoon corridor, where the marine layer sits longer than it does inland.
• The gate sits visibly out of square or the gap at the hinge post is uneven. When a hinge weld stretches or tears, the leaf drops and the gap at the top hinge opens up. You can see daylight where the hinge strap meets the post. The gate still “works,” but the operator is now carrying load it was never designed for, and the motor takes the punishment.

DIY or Call Us?

Welding is not a DIY job. The safety issue is not the weld itself; it’s what happens when a weld fails under load. A cracked hinge weld on a 400-pound gate is holding the entire leaf in place. Cutting it free without knowing what else is connected, what the spring tension is, and how the operator is loaded can turn a broken gate into a dropped gate. That is a serious injury risk. We have seen homeowners attempt a repair with a flux-core welder from a big-box store, burn through the hinge material, and leave the gate standing on a single marginal weld. We replaced the hinge, the post cap, and the operator mounting bolts.

What you can safely do: photograph the crack, note whether the gate moves at all under operator power, and mark the exact spot with tape or paint. That documentation helps us quote the repair faster when we arrive. If the gate is making contact with the ground and the operator is still energized, kill the operator switch and leave it.
