DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

A DoorKing gate motor replacement in Long Beach typically runs $850 to $1,900 installed, depending on the series (swing vs. slide), whether the arm and bracket are reusable, and how much rewiring the existing setup needs. We stock DoorKing-compatible motors on our trucks and complete most replacements in a single visit. Most Long Beach owners discover the failure the same way: the gate worked fine last week, hesitated yesterday, and today the motor hums with no movement or sits completely silent while the opener board still shows power.

If that sounds close to your week, the rest of this page tells you what we find when we open the housing, what it costs, and what you should check before you spend a dollar.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing builds two families of residential gate operators we replace most often: the swing-arm units (6002, 6003, 6004, 6050, 6100) and the slide-gate units (9050, 9100, 9150). The motor inside is not interchangeable between these families, and even within swing models the mounting plate changed between the 6002 and the 6003/6004 generation.

The quickest way to identify yours is the data plate on the operator housing: it lists the model number, voltage (115V or 24V system), and a manufacture date. If the plate is weathered off or painted over, the arm geometry gets you close: a straight cast arm with a clevis pin is almost always a 6002-era unit; a curved stamped arm points to the 6003 or later.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for DoorKing, we lean OEM or OEM-spec aftermarket (Ritron, All-O-Matic equivalents) because the limit-switch mounts and capacitor values are tighter on DoorKing than on generic swing operators. A universal motor will bolt in but often runs hot because the shaft speed doesn’t match the gear reduction on the older arm. We’ve seen several in Long Beach where a universal swap worked for eight months and then stripped the spur gear.

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the start capacitor has lost range. On DoorKing 6002/6003 units that capacitor is a common first failure, especially in Long Beach where the summer heat cooks the dielectric fluid inside the can.
  • Gate moves in one direction only. The limit switch on the rev side is stuck or the internal cam has walked. It’s repairable in some cases, but if the cam surface is scored we replace the motor and limit stack together.
  • Gate opens on its own or drifts after closing. Sometimes this is a board relay; more often on older units the motor’s internal brake is gone and the arm sags under its own weight.
  • Noise changes: grinding, clicking, or a hard clunk at the end of travel. A clunk at the end usually means the gear is no longer carrying the arm cleanly. Grinding from inside the housing is metal on metal, and that’s the point where continued use chews the worm gear beyond cheap repair.
  • The motor thermal-switches off after every cycle. When the windings start degrading, the motor overdraws and the overheat protection cuts in. In coastal Long Beach air, corroded terminals at the capacitor make this worse by raising resistance before the motor even starts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, most DoorKing swing motor replacements we install land between $850 and $1,400. Slide-gate motors on a 9050/9100 run higher, typically $1,200 to $1,900, because the motor, chain adjustment, and limit stack all come out together and the rail alignment usually needs a reset.

  • Motor and matching capacitor: sourced as a pair, because installing a new motor with an old capacitor is how you get a call-back in six weeks.
  • Limit switch inspection and reset: we photograph the before and after positions and leave the readings in your job record.
  • Arm bracket and hardware check: if the bracket is cracked or egged out, that’s quoted before we touch it, not discovered after.
  • Cycle test at both ends: the gate is run through open and close under load, with the safety loops checked at the same time.

The written price is handed to you before the first tool comes off the truck. Nothing gets added at the end unless you approve it in the middle. Every replacement is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and the photo record of what came out and what went in is part of the job, not a line item.

Here is the honest split. You can safely do the observation half: check whether the breaker is on, listen for the hum, make a note of whether the gate moves at all, and photograph the data plate. That information saves us a trip, and it’s genuinely useful to have before you call.

What we don’t recommend is opening the operator housing and swapping a motor yourself. DoorKing operators run on 115V or a high-torque 24V system, and the capacitor holds charge even after power is cut. The limit cams are set in degrees of travel, not eyeballed, and a motor mounted a quarter inch out of alignment will chew its own gear in a season. This is the part of the job where a mistake costs more than the motor itself. If you have the motor in hand and want a second opinion on whether the diagnosis fits, call (424) 788-1027 and one of our techs will tell you straight what’s involved.
