BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible hinge and roller replacements across Long Beach, and most jobs run between $180 and $420 installed, depending on whether it’s a single hinge, a full roller set, or a paired rebuild. Same-day service is available when we have your part on the truck, which we usually do. The call usually starts the same way: the gate worked fine for years, then it started dragging at one end, or groaning mid-swing, or sitting visibly lower on one side. That’s the hinge or the roller telling you it’s done. Here is what I found. Here is what it costs. Here is what I left behind.

BFT is one of nine gate-automation brands we service, and we also carry hinge and roller parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls on the truck. But this page is specifically for BFT. If the nameplate says BFT and the gate sags, grinds, or won’t seat square against the stop, this is your page.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT is a European brand, and their hinge and roller hardware shows up mainly on two gate families: the Deimos and Phobos swing-gate lines, and the Giuno and Rigel sliding-gate kits that many Long Beach installers have been fitting since the mid-2010s. The compatibility gotcha that trips up DIY buyers is that BFT roller brackets are sized by the gate leaf’s weight class, not by the motor model. A Deimos BT A400 motor on a light pedestrian gate takes a different roller spec than the same motor on a 900-pound driveway leaf. The motor tells you almost nothing about the hinge or roller.

To identify what you need, look for two things: the stamped steel plate on the hinge body (usually a two-letter prefix followed by a number, like PH or RH), and the roller wheel’s outside diameter in millimeters. BFT rollers in residential Long Beach installs typically run 40mm to 80mm, with a few 100mm units on heavy commercial-style leaves. If the stamp is gone, measure the roller and photograph the bracket. We’ll match it.

On OEM versus aftermarket: genuine BFT hinges are good steel, but their rollers wear at roughly the same rate as quality aftermarket equivalents, and the aftermarket ones often cost 30 to 45 percent less. We’ll install either. What we won’t do is bolt a mismatched bracket onto a gate and call it a fix. The bracket geometry has to match the leaf’s pivot point, or the gate binds and the motor’s limit switch starts tripping for no reason you can see.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
  • The gate sits visibly lower on one side. This is usually the lower hinge’s bushing or bearing worn through. The leaf’s weight is now riding on the motor’s pinion or the frame, not the hinge. Every day it runs like this, the motor works harder.
  • A grinding or scraping sound mid-swing. On BFT sliding gates, that’s almost always a flat-spotted or seized roller. The wheel stops rolling and starts dragging, which shaves a flat edge into the nylon tread. It won’t un-flatten itself.
  • The gate hesitates or shudders right at the start. A seized roller or a hinge with water intrusion makes the initial movement jerky. The BFT control board reads the extra draw as an obstacle, so it starts soft and then lurches.
  • Rust trails or orange staining under the hinge. In Long Beach, salt air off the harbor and the Colorado Lagoon corridor does predictable things to raw steel. Once the plating fails and water gets into the bearing, the hinge is done. Surface rust can be cleaned; rust weeping out of the joint means the seal is gone.
  • The gate won’t close square against the stop. If the hinge pins are worn, the leaf cocks forward or back and the gate misses the mechanical stop by an inch or two. The motor keeps running a half-second longer, which overdrives the limit and eventually faults the board.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a single BFT hinge replacement runs $180 to $260 installed. A full roller set on a sliding gate runs $240 to $340. A paired hinge rebuild on a heavy swing gate with new bushings and pins runs $300 to $420. The spread comes down to two things: whether the bracket itself survived (if it’s cracked or wallowed out, you’re paying for the bracket too), and whether the leaf needs to be re-hung to sit square.

The price you get is the price you pay. Under Clause 1 of our Haven Standard, the written price is handed to you before any work starts. It covers the part, the labor, the adjustment, and a photo record of what was installed, what it measured, and where it was set. That record is yours, and we file a copy with the job. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the hinge or roller fails within a year, we make it right at no charge.

We also offer a free second opinion on any written estimate from another company. Bring the paperwork and we’ll review it at no cost.

If your BFT gate is dragging, there are two things you can check without opening a toolbox. First, run your hand under the gate leaf and feel for rust flakes or a flat spot on the roller. Second, watch the gap between the gate and the stop as it closes. If the gap changes, the hinge is moving. That’s the diagnostic. The repair is a different matter.

Here’s the honest split: a hinge swap on a light BFT pedestrian gate is within reach for a careful owner with a floor jack and the right-sized pins. But on a full-size driveway gate, the leaf weighs hundreds of pounds. A gate that falls off its hinges while you’re working on it can break bones. If the gate is taller than you are, call us. We’ll re-hang it on a jack, set the roller height so the leaf runs true, and photograph the whole thing. The number is (424) 788-1027. A live person answers, day or night.
