BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motors for most swing and slide models in the current lineup, and a standard BFT gate motor replacement in Long Beach typically runs $1,140 to $2,300 installed, depending on the model series and whether the arm bracket or control board survives. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the gate stopped mid-travel one morning, the motor hums without moving, or the keypad beeps but nothing engages. If you’re in that spot right now, we can usually get a BFT motor swapped same day when the model is on our truck, which it usually is for the Phobos, Deimos, and Botticelli lines.

Here is what I found. Here is what it costs. Here is what I left behind.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT doesn’t build one universal motor. They build series-specific actuators and control electronics that look similar on the outside and won’t swap across lines. The Phobos series (Phobos N, Phobos NL, Phobos A) runs swing gates up to roughly 1,100 pounds per leaf. The Deimos series handles heavier swing gates, and the Botticelli line covers slide gates. Before we touch anything, we check the label plate on the existing motor housing. It carries the model, the serial, and the torque spec. If the label is gone, which salt air near the Colorado Lagoon corridor has done to more than a few, we pull the arm length and gate weight to match the replacement.

On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT OEM motors cost more and carry the manufacturer warranty. Quality aftermarket-compatible units exist for older Phobos and Deimos models, and we’ll quote both when available. The honest tradeoff is warranty length and part availability. We don’t push aftermarket on anything still under an active BFT warranty, and we don’t push OEM on a fifteen-year-old gate where the aftermarket unit is the smarter money. We’re an independent shop, not a BFT dealer, so the recommendation is based on what fits and what lasts, not what we’re obligated to sell.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. The start capacitor has failed or the internal gear train has stripped. A capacitor is a cheap fix; a stripped gear usually means the motor is done.
  • The gate moves a few inches and reverses. The obstruction sensing is reading resistance that isn’t there, often from a failing torque limiter or a control board that’s lost its calibration.
  • The gate opens but won’t close, or closes but won’t open. One limit switch has failed. On BFT units these are small microswitches inside the actuator that tell the board where travel ends.
  • The motor runs loud, or you hear grinding from inside the housing. Bearing wear, usually accelerated by moisture ingress. Coastal Long Beach air shortens the life of the internal bearings on units without good housing seals.
  • Nothing happens at all, no click, no hum. The control board has lost power or failed entirely. Before replacing the motor, we test the board independently. Replacing a motor when the board is dead is a $1,500 mistake nobody should make twice.

We see the first and last items most in Long Beach: start capacitors fail from heat cycling, and control boards fail from surge damage or corroded connections.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a BFT gate motor replacement installed runs between $1,140 and $2,300. Light-duty Phobos actuators on a single swing gate sit at the lower end. A Deimos on a heavy double swing or a Botticelli slide motor with a longer rack sits at the upper end. What moves the number within that range: the actuator model, whether the existing arm bracket can be reused, whether we’re also replacing the control board or just the motor, and whether the gate itself needs realignment so the new motor isn’t fighting a sagging hinge.

The written price includes the motor, the labor, the removal of the old unit, and any limit-switch calibration. We hand you the price before any work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. If we find something mid-job that changes the scope, we stop, show you what we found, and get your sign-off before spending another dollar. The motor carries its manufacturer warranty; our labor carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Call (424) 788-1027 for an exact quote on your model. Estimates are free.

You can safely check three things yourself: the breaker feeding the gate, the condition of the power cord and any visible wiring at the operator, and whether the manual release lever is engaged, which disengages the motor and lets the gate free-swing. If the release lever is up on a BFT unit and the gate swings freely but won’t move under power, the motor or board is the problem.

What you should not do yourself: open the actuator housing and start replacing internal components. BFT swing motors contain a pre-loaded torque spring, and the unit runs on line voltage. The torque limiter and limit switches are set to the specific travel of your gate, and getting them wrong means the gate over-travels and tears the bracket off, or the motor burns itself out on the first cycle. We’ve fixed several DIY attempts this year alone. If the diagnosis above matches what you’re seeing, call us at (424) 788-1027 and we’ll get a technician to your gate with the right BFT part on the truck.
