Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

A Linear keypad or intercom that’s stopped responding usually needs one of three fixes: a replacement code board, a new wiring harness between the keypad and the gate operator, or a full keypad swap when the membrane buttons have worn through. On a service call in Long Beach, you’re looking at $210 to $420 installed for a keypad replacement, with the parts on our truck and the job finished the same visit. Intercom systems run higher, typically $380 to $650, because they involve both a door station and an interior handset or phone bridge.

Where it shows up first is usually at the driveway: the four-digit code goes in, the star or # button gets pressed, and nothing opens. Sometimes it’s gradual, with buttons needing a harder push, or the keypad works intermittently after rain. By the time most Long Beach homeowners call us, they’ve already re-entered their code ten times and tested it from the driver’s seat at three different angles.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built gate and garage keypads across several product lines, and the repair path depends on which one you have. The most common in residential Long Beach are the Linear AK-11, the older LPR series, the blue-backlit AM-KP, and the MegaCode MGT gate keypad. The compatibility question that trips people up is this: Linear’s MegaCode keypads use rolling-code technology, and they won’t talk to an older fixed-code receiver without a converter board. We’ve seen Long Beach homeowners buy a “Linear keypad” online, wire it into a 2009-era receiver, and get nothing, because the code format doesn’t match. The original part number is printed on the backplate of almost every Linear keypad ever made, and you want that number before ordering anything aftermarket.

When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, here’s what’s held up in our experience: genuine Linear parts fit the mounting screw pattern and have the wiring harness that mates to the existing cable without splicing. Good aftermarket equivalents exist, particularly for the ubiquitous keypads that haven’t changed in years, but they often need crimped spade connectors and a little weatherproofing silicone, which is fine if the tech knows that going in. Vance Gate Repair Long Beach is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear, but we stock genuine Linear boards, keypads, intercom pucks, and the repair parts for the other brands people run into around Long Beach.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Code accepted but gate won’t move. The keypad itself is fine; the relay output on the keypad’s circuit board has failed, or the signal isn’t reaching the operator. We test both sides before calling the keypad dead, because replacing a working keypad won’t fix a broken operator board.
  • Some keys work, others don’t. The membrane switch contacts under the dead keys are corroded or physically worn. Linear’s rubber membranes fail on one or two high-use digits first, usually the ones in your code. There’s no per-key repair; it’s a full membrane and board replacement.
  • Works after rain, dead when dry, or vice versa. Moisture has gotten past the weather seal and is shorting the keypad’s board unpredictably. Salt air near Long Beach’s marine layer accelerates this; we replace more Linear keypads around Colorado Lagoon and Naples than anywhere else in the city because of it.
  • Intercom rings but you can’t hear the visitor, or they can’t hear you. Usually a failed speaker/microphone unit in the door station or a short in the low-voltage wire run. Critically, the wire between intercom and house phone is often buried or stapled under stucco, so pinpointing the break matters before buying any part.
  • Keypad works but interior intercom handset stays silent. The intercom’s power supply or the bridge unit supplying ring voltage has failed. On Linear systems this is a small DC wall transformer, and it’s the cheapest component that gets blamed for the most expensive misdiagnoses.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard Linear keypad swap in Long Beach, we quote between $210 and $420 installed. That includes the new Linear keypad, the weatherproof mounting and wiring connectors, testing from code entry to gate operation, and the photo record of what we installed. A Multi-Code or generic-compatible keypad runs at the low end of that range; a MegaCode rolling-code keypad or one with wireless transmitter capability sits at the top. If we’re also replacing the operator’s receiver to match the new keypad, add $90 to $160.

Intercom systems land between $380 and $650 for a door station and handset replacement, with a chunk of that labor going toward the low-voltage wire run, which half the time is kinked, punctured, or chewed. The written price is handed to you before any work starts, and that’s the price on the invoice at the end. We also photograph the old part’s wiring before we disconnect anything, so if the original part number is faded, the record is there for any future tech who works on that gate.

There are two safe checks an owner can make. First, power-cycle the gate operator and see if the keypad works for ten minutes afterward; that tells you if the operator’s board briefly stopped talking to the keypad. Second, open the keypad and look for obvious water, rust, or loose spade connectors at the terminal block. Anything beyond that means working with 12 to 24 VAC low voltage and, in the case of intercom wiring, identifying wire pairs behind stucco and along fences. Low voltage won’t hurt you, but a miswired keypad can backfeed the operator board, and a replacement operator board costs more than the keypad service call. If your keypad is dead, call us at (424) 788-1027 and we’ll bring the right Linear part the first time.
