Which FAAC Models This Applies To

Access control installation on FAAC systems comes down to knowing which control board is in the operator. The FAAC 455 D board, common on E024S and S418 swing-arm operators, takes a different keypad wiring path than the 450 MPS board found on older 400 series units. If you open the operator housing and read the silk-screened board number in the corner, that single piece of information tells us which access device will talk to it without a relay adapter.

For most Long Beach homes we see three FAAC setups. The first is a FAAC 455 D board with an XKP-1 or XKP-2 keypad mounted on a gooseneck pedestal. The second is a phone-entry system tied into a FAAC PhotoBeam receiver, common in gated communities near Park Estates and Naples. • Keypad is dark or the backlight flickers. The board is not getting 24V AC from the transformer, or the ribbon cable between the keypad face and the receiver board has corroded through. • Keypad beeps but the gate does not move. The keypad is sending the code; the operator is not acting on it. Usually that is a dead relay on the access control board or a wire that pulled loose from the OPEN terminal on the FAAC main board.
• Card reader flashes red or yellow instead of green. The reader has lost its programming or the Wiegand data line is shorted. If the gate still opens from the exit loop or the wall button, the problem is between the reader and the input terminal, not the operator itself.
• Gate opened from the keypad and never closed. You have a missing or miswired close command. FAAC systems rely on a timer or a dedicated close signal from the access device; if that signal never arrives, the gate waits forever. The clue is the operator display showing the gate in the open position with no fault code.
• Intercom rings but no audio, or rings the wrong number. Phone-entry systems tied to FAAC operators fail in two places: the telephone relay board in the access cabinet and the wiring feed to the street pedestal. If the line voltage drops below the board’s threshold, the intercom rings but the call never completes.

Access control keyboards deal with low voltage, but they are still wired into a gate operator that can exert significant force on a person or a vehicle. The safest thing you can do yourself is check the obvious: is the transformer plugged in, is the breaker on, is the keypad face cracked or full of water. If the keypad is dark and the breaker is fine, do not open the operator cabinet and start probing terminals unless you are comfortable reading a 24V AC multimeter reading against a wiring diagram. A wrong wire on the OPEN terminal can make the gate open without warning, and a gate motor that fires while your hand is in the enclosure is a real risk.
